Cal Johannsen was born in Bemidji, MN and was raised on the family farm in Lake George township of Hubbard County until December of 1973. He graduated from Laporte High School in 1971 and then attended the Law Enforcement program at The Alexandria Vocational Technical Institute. He moved to Kelliher, MN in December of 1973 when he was hired as the Police Officer of Kelliher. In April of 1976 he went to work for the Beltrami County Sheriff as a Deputy and lived in the Grygla area for a time and then in the Bemidji Area.
He and his wife Cleo were married in June of 1978 in Bemidji and then in January of 1980 they moved to the family farm in Lake George township when he was hired as a Deputy Sheriff in Hubbard County. They raised three children, Tim who lives in Laporte, MN., Terri who lives in Monticello, MN., and Tonia who died in a automobile accident on her way to school in April of 2001.
Cal has been active in Community Service as a volunteer Fireman for Lake George since 1980, a Charter member of the Hubbard County Mounted Posse, and has been active in the Animal Science area of 4-H. He served as a township supervisor for Lake George township for 13 years and left that position to take office as County Commissioner to which he was elected in 2002.
On December 28, 2002 Cal retired from Law Enforcement after serving for 29 years.
Cal serves on several committees in the performance of his duties as County Commissioner including: Extension, Fair Board, Headwaters Regional Development, Northwestern Minnesota Juvenile Center, Parks and Recreation, County Facilities Group, and Noxious Weed.
