Coffeetime with the County - Sheriff Aukes
Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes stopped by the Coffee Time studio on January 15th to talk about some of the biggest issues facing local law enforcement.
On immigration enforcement, Sheriff Aukes was clear: Hubbard County doesn't need a written agreement with ICE to cooperate with federal partners. That cooperation already happens naturally, just as it does with the FBI and BCA. The focus remains on those who break the law, while recognizing that many immigrants in the area are here legally and contributing to the community.
He also raised concerns about Minnesota's early release program, which allows even violent and repeat offenders out of prison in a fraction of their sentenced time. He called it a slap in the face to victims and a real frustration for the deputies working hard to keep dangerous people off the streets.
The new Paid Family Leave Act is another challenge. Up to 20 weeks of paid leave sounds straightforward, but for essential employees like dispatchers and jail staff, someone always has to cover. That means overtime costs falling on taxpayers.
On a positive note, the sheriff's office construction is on schedule and can't come soon enough, with improvements to jail layout and overall efficiency in the works.
Finally, Sheriff Aukes announced this will be his last term. After 36 years in law enforcement and 16 as Hubbard County Sheriff, retirement is on the horizon, though he shared plans to run for County Commissioner in District Three to keep serving the community he loves. Thank you, Sheriff Aukes, for everything you do!
